Cigna to hire vets for Connecticut jobs

Posted on November 20, 2011

Cigna has announced a company-wide initiative to hire for Connecticut jobs.

Cigna has joined Hero Health Hire, a coalition of companies and other health care concerns that are making an effort to employing wounded veterans.

Hero Health Hire includes companies, associations and hospitals from across the spectrum of the health care industry. Together, they collectively employ hundreds of thousands of workers and have committed to help veterans find and retain jobs.

The initiative was launched in Washington, D.C., at an industry summit that included the U.S. Secretary of Labor, Members of Congress, agencies and the military.

“Cigna is proud to help veterans leverage their strong leadership and problem-solving skills, built while serving our country,” said John M. Murabito, Executive Vice President, Human Resources and Services. “At Cigna we are focused on attracting, acquiring and developing the best talent in the marketplace. Hiring and retaining veterans will assist Cigna in its quest to recruit and retain excellent leaders who instill trust and discipline to perform on behalf of our customers.”

Each month, tens of thousands of “Wounded Warriors” — men and women who have been injured or become ill during military service — transition out of the military only to struggle to find jobs in the civilian workforce. Many are interviewing for a job or writing a resume for the first time, unsure of how military skills and experiences might translate to the workplace or what accommodations may be needed for assimilation.

The health care industry — including insurers, health plans, pharmaceutical companies, device manufacturers and hospital networks — is the fastest-growing industry in the U.S. economy. To keep pace, an ongoing stream of talented individuals are needed to help meet multi-generational health care needs. The industry also is uniquely positioned to understand and support the needs of the nation’s Wounded Warriors.
